Top hats are very simple to make and a perfect treat to make with a keen junior cook

These little buns were a staple of every birthday party my brother and I had when growing up. My mum would make a huge batch of them, along with rice krispie cakes, and they were always hugely popular.

Just like the latter, they’re also very simple to make and a perfect treat to make with a keen junior cook. For the above picture, I had to make do with the marshmallows we had at home which weren’t a great shape, but the basic supermarket ones are much better.

Once you melt the chocolate, you just make as many as you can. As you can see, even if they’re messy, they still have a certain charm!

Ingredients:
100 grams of milk chocolate, melted
One standard supermarket bag marshmallows
One packet Smarties
Mini muffin cases

Method:
1. Melt the chocolate in a bowl over some hot water or instead, in increments in the microwave.
2. Working on one at a time, put a teaspoon or so of chocolate in the base and add a marshmallow (wider side up if they’re that perfect top hat shape).
3. Use the tip of the teaspoon to put a little bit of melted chocolate on the top of the marshmallow and add a Smartie.
4. Leave to cool so that the chocolate can harden. It doesn’t take very long.
5. Eat and enjoy!
